Keith Urban’s History With The Opry
The Grammy-winning Australian country artist Keith Urban, known for hits like “Blue Ain’t Your Color” and “Somebody Like You,” has a remarkable history with the Grand Ole Opry.
Before being inducted into the Hall of Fame, Keith had the opportunity to perform at the Opry with his band, The Ranch, as the backup band for the legendary Australian country artist Slim Dusty.
When Keith was inducted into the Hall of Fame, he shared that during that early performance, he dreamed of one-day being center stage at the iconic Grand Ole Opry.
His dream came true on April 21, 2012, more than a decade after he debuted as a solo artist in 2000.
Vince Gill originally invited him to join during a benefit concert in Nashville. After the concert, he was surprised with a duffel bag containing a microphone stand. He was officially welcomed on April 21, 2012, by Trace Adkins.
Billboard shared a quote from the night,
“That is awesome! It’s a long way from Caboolture [Queensland, Australia] to the stage here at the Grand Ole Opry … and to stand in this circle is the most phenomenal thing. I just want to thank the Opry for this honor, but also the responsibility. This is a responsibility that I take deep to the heart of me. …This once and for all shows the global popularity and reach of country music. … I honor the history of country music, but I absolutely fully dedicate myself to the future of country music, as well. God bless you all.”
Keith Urban Pays Tribute To Crystal Gayle
Crystal Gayle, the younger sister of Loretta Lynn and an iconic country singer in her own right, was honored at the Opry 100 event by Keith Urban. Urban took the stage and expressed his admiration for her by saying,
“She first played at the Opry when she was 16 years of age. She was later inducted as a member right here on this very stage by her big sister, Loretta Lynn. She’s always been her own artist.” He continued, “She became the first female country artist ever to have a platinum-selling album, the first one ever.”
He then performed her famous hit, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” which is widely recognized as one of her signature songs.
Crystal Gayle attended the Opry 100 and watched from the audience as the Australian singer performed her song live.
After that, Keith Urban continued his performance with his hit “Wasted Time,” released in 2016. You can watch a short clip from the performance below.
