Evelyn’s late husband, Howard, had once promised they’d live and di:e together, but fate had other plans. One night, he suffered a heart att:ack and passed away, leaving Evelyn to live alone.
Howard had owned a successful antique shop and kept valuable items in their home. Rumors of his fortune had led to past robbery attempts. Evelyn, despite feeling unsafe, refused help from neighbors—even though many knew she lived alone.

One day, Evelyn noticed her 31-year-old neighbor Rick lurking suspiciously near her fence. He quickly looked away and acted casual, but something about him unsettled her. Rumors around the neighborhood claimed Rick had lost his job and sent his son to live with his parents. Evelyn kept her distance.
The next evening, while reading on her balcony, she caught Rick staring into her bedroom window. His cold gaze left her uneasy. She secured the house and began checking every lock and blind more carefully each night.

One night, while making tea, Evelyn heard a sound in the garden. Grabbing a frying pan, she peeked out and saw Rick and another man climbing her fence. Her heart raced.
“What are you doing?” she shouted. “Leave now, or I’ll call the police!”
The two fled, but she found empty beer bottles in the bushes. That night, she couldn’t sleep, fearing they might return. The next day, she had new locks and security cameras installed.
Private security patrols
Just after midnight, a loud crash outside woke her. She rushed to the monitors but realized the camera sound was muted. Peeking through the kitchen curtain, she spotted two masked figures in the yard—one was tampering with her garage camera. They were back.
Instead of hiding, Evelyn grabbed Howard’s photo and began speaking aloud, pretending he was there.
“Oh, Howard, do you remember the gold watch and the silver flute in the garage closet? The ones from your grandfather and great-great-grandfather?”
Outside, the thieves listened. Hearing about the supposed valuables, they moved toward the garage.
Evelyn took action. With pepper spray, spare keys, and Howard’s old baseball bat, she quietly slipped into the garage through the back. Just as the burglars entered, she sprayed them both and slammed the metal shutter down. One tried to lift it, but she locked it shut.

Within minutes, flashing red and blue lights lit up the yard. The police arrived, secured the garage, and unmasked the intruders—one of them was Rick.
“I knew it,” Evelyn whispered.

“You know him?” Officer Carter asked.
“Yes,” she replied. “He lives two houses down. I saw him sneaking around days ago.”

“You don’t need to worry anymore,” the officer said. “You handled this with bravery and quick thinking. Was that story about antiques true?”
Evelyn smiled. “No. I made it up to lure them in.”
“Brilliant move,” Carter said. “You should be proud.”
The next day, Evelyn called her son Mark. He begged her to move to Arizona, but she couldn’t leave the house filled with memories of Howard. Instead, Mark changed jobs and moved back with his family.
