A New Hobby, A New Awakening

Joanna, 47, who has always been open about the ups and downs of marriage, shared the secret to the couple’s latest attempt at reigniting their romance: dance lessons. Yes, you read that right. Joanna says that after years of being together, the couple decided to push past their comfort zones and take dancing lessons.

“We still feel like newbies. Anytime you unlock a new thing, and you do it together, it only grows your relationship,” Joanna told People in a new interview. She explained that they hired a couple to come to their office and teach them how to dance—just the two of them. But, as expected, it wasn’t as easy as it sounded.

“You talk about awkward,” Chip, 50, admitted, revealing that their first experience was far from graceful. Neither of them had any dance experience, and it was hard to even make eye contact at first. But it was this awkwardness that ended up becoming the catalyst for something special.

From Awkward to Awakening: The Surprising Impact of Dance

What started as a simple activity quickly turned into something far deeper for the couple. Joanna describes the experience as a “new awakening” for their marriage.

“You see insecurities, you see strengths, and it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s a new awakening,’” Joanna said, sharing that the experience forced them to face not only their physical awkwardness but also the vulnerabilities in their relationship. And while they started out struggling to even hold hands or look each other in the eye, after just a couple of weeks, they began looking forward to their lessons.

“I felt really strange, awkward. But then, after two or three weeks, we started looking forward to those lessons,” Chip added. The couple found that the lessons helped them reconnect in a way that went beyond just physical touch. In fact, it was a reminder that all relationships need a little refresh and a challenge every now and then.

“It was this sweet reminder that all of us could use refreshes and challenges in our relationships,” Chip said.

“How Do You Stay in Sync in Life?”

The more Chip and Joanna danced, the more they realized that the experience was symbolic of something much bigger in their relationship. “Dancing is the most symbolic way of talking about, as a couple, ‘How do you stay in sync in life?’” Joanna reflected.

Despite their years of success in both business and their personal lives, the couple was surprised at how offbeat they were when it came to dancing. “We do really good in real life, we have our rhythm. But with dancing, we were so off, it was surprising. We’ve done everything else so well, but this we totally suck at! But it was beautiful,” Joanna added.

It’s no secret that Chip and Joanna have made a career out of being perfectly in sync. As the stars of Fixer Upper and the founders of Magnolia, they have become the epitome of the power couple. But dancing, they found, was something that truly tested their coordination and partnership. And in doing so, it brought them even closer.

Chip’s “Second Wind” and Joanna’s Growth

Throughout their marriage, Chip has often been known for his playful, spontaneous nature, while Joanna tends to be the more grounded, thoughtful one. But now, after more than two decades together, it seems that they are beginning to swap roles in a way that surprises even them.

Joanna admits, “I would say, as we’re getting older, I’m shifting and I’m more like Chip, and Chip is more like me.” She goes on to explain that Chip’s ability to embrace change with a positive attitude has rubbed off on her, while she’s become more open to taking risks, just like him.

“It is more fun to be married to a Chip, than a Joanna,” she joked. “So I’m sorry for all those years where I was a bit of a dud.”

Chip responded, teasing his wife, “You were a stick in the mud for quite some time. You’re really starting to catch your second wind.” The banter between them speaks volumes about the comfort and affection they share, even after so many years.

Parenthood and Marriage: A Delicate Balance

In addition to their careers, Chip and Joanna are parents to five children: Ella, 18; Emmie, 15; Duke, 16; Crew, 7; and Drake, 20. Balancing a high-profile career with raising five kids can be challenging, but the couple has always seemed to handle it with grace and humor.

Still, they acknowledge that raising children, running a business, and maintaining a relationship requires constant work and communication. And in a world where many couples struggle to keep the spark alive, Chip and Joanna’s decision to try dancing lessons is a testament to their dedication to each other.

“It’s about growing and evolving together. We never want to stop trying new things,” Chip said.

The Bottom Line: The Secret to Their Success? Keep Evolving

For Chip and Joanna, their willingness to try something new—even if it means feeling awkward and uncomfortable at first—has kept their marriage strong and exciting. Whether it’s taking dance lessons or sharing lighthearted moments in interviews, they know that their connection requires effort, communication, and, sometimes, a little vulnerability.

While many couples might settle into a comfortable routine after more than two decades together, Chip and Joanna are proving that it’s never too late to learn something new together. And as they continue to share their journey with fans, their relationship remains an inspiring example of how love, laughter, and growth can go hand-in-hand.
