The small ward was silent.
A five-year-old boy lay on a snow-white sheet, his eyes wide and weary. The doctors had told his parents that surgery was his only remaining chance.
The nurses were preparing him for anesthesia when the boy whispered softly:
— “Can… Archie come to me?”
— “Who is Archie, darling?” one of the nurses asked, surprised.
— “My dog. I miss him so much. Please…” his lips trembled.

— “You know, sweetheart, animals aren’t allowed in the hospital. You’re already so weak, you must understand…” she tried to explain gently.
The boy turned his face away, tears welling at the corners of his eyes:
— “But I… I may never see him again.”
Those words pierced the nurse’s heart. She exchanged glances with her colleagues and, almost against her own rules, agreed:
— “Alright. Just for a minute.”
An hour later, Archie’s parents brought him in.
The moment the dog saw his little owner, he dashed to the bed, leapt up, and pressed himself close against the boy. For the first time in weeks, the child smiled, hugging his dog tightly.
The doctors and nurses watched the scene with misty eyes: the bond between the boy and his dog was stronger than fear or pain.
But suddenly, Archie stiffened.
His fur bristled. He jumped from the bed and rushed toward the corner of the room.
The surgeon scheduled to operate stood there. Archie barked so ferociously it seemed he was about to bite.
— “Get rid of this animal!” the surgeon shouted, backing away in alarm.
Staff rushed to restrain the dog, but one doctor stared at the surgeon with growing suspicion—finally realizing what was wrong.
For illustration purposes only
A strong, acrid smell lingered in the air.
“Oh my God…” the anesthesiologist whispered, eyes wide. “Are you drunk?!”
The room went deathly still. The boy’s parents turned pale, the nurses exchanged horrified looks. Archie kept growling, standing guard over his small owner.
Within minutes, the truth was undeniable: the surgeon had indeed come to work drunk.
He was immediately suspended and stripped of his license.
The surgery was rescheduled.
The boy was entrusted to another doctor, and a few days later the procedure was successful.
In the end, everyone said the same: Archie was more than a loyal friend—he was a guardian angel
