MSNBC in Crisis: Behind the Curtain of a Network in Turmoil
MSNBC, once a dominant force in cable news, is now grappling with a series of challenges that threaten its position in the media landscape. From plummeting ratings to internal upheavals, the network’s future appears uncertain.
Following the 2024 U.S. presidential election, MSNBC experienced a significant drop in viewership. Primetime ratings fell by 57% in the key 25–54 demographic, and overall audience numbers have continued to decline. In the week ending November 24, 2024, MSNBC’s primetime audience plummeted by 53%, from 1.34 million viewers to just 632,000. This sharp decline has raised concerns about the network’s ability to retain its audience.
High-Profile Departures and Internal Strife
The network’s turmoil is further compounded by the departure of several prominent figures. Andrea Mitchell, a veteran anchor, confirmed her exit after 17 years, though she will continue reporting for NBC News. Steve Kornacki, known for his election analysis, is leaving for expanded roles at NBC News and NBC Sports. These exits signal deeper issues within the network.
MSNBC’s programming changes have also sparked controversy. The cancellation of “The ReidOut,” hosted by Joy Reid, and “Alex Wagner Tonight” has drawn criticism, especially regarding the network’s treatment of non-white hosts. Rachel Maddow publicly condemned these decisions, calling them “indefensible” and expressing concerns about the impact on staff morale.
In January 2025, Rashida Jones stepped down as president of MSNBC, and Rebecca Kutler was appointed as her successor. Under Kutler’s leadership, the network is undergoing significant restructuring, including layoffs and reassignments. Approximately 100 staff members have been affected, with many being reassigned to NBC or MSNBC. Notably, Rachel Maddow’s staff has been significantly reduced, with most producers being let go.
As MSNBC navigates these challenges, its future remains uncertain. The network’s ability to adapt to the changing media landscape and address internal issues will be crucial in determining its place in the competitive world of cable news. The coming months will be pivotal in shaping MSNBC’s trajectory.
